C.S. Harris Memorial Bursary

The C.S. Harris Memorial Bursary was established by Dr. Alec Martin in 2023 to honour the 100th anniversary of his grandfather’s graduation from Ontario Veterinary College.

Each year, it assists one Phase 1 student per year with a $1250 bursary. The student is then eligible to continue to receive $1250 per year of veterinary school, for a total of $5000 over four years.

Dr. C.S. Harris graduated from the first class of Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph and would go on to own a successful practice in Magog, Quebec. His grandson, Dr. Alec Martin, also demonstrated an interest in business. After graduating from OVC himself, Alec pursued his MBA and co-founded Neighbourhood Pet Clinic in London, Ontario. As such, the recipient of the C.S. Harris Memorial Bursary will be selected based on the applicant’s answer to a business-related question as it applies to veterinary medicine.

To Apply for the 2024 Bursary:

All applicants must be registered for Phase 1 of the DVM program at Ontario Veterinary College. They must possess an interest in business, as demonstrated by a one-page paper answering the question, “If you were to design the most pet-centric veterinary facility in North America, how would your business be different from the rest?”

Entries will be judged based on three categories: creativity, communication (including spelling/grammar), and knowledge of business.

All applications must be submitted by email to alec@neighbourhoodpetclinic.com with the subject line “C.S. Harris Memorial Bursary”. Please also include:

• A recent transcript, as admissions average will be used in the case of a tie; and
• Proof of admission to Ontario Veterinary College

The successful applicant will be chosen in late Fall 2024.
