Why Spay or Neuter Your Pet?

Spaying and neutering isn’t just about preventing unwanted litters, it can also play an important role in your pet’s long-term health and behavior.

However, the decision of whether and when to spay or neuter should always be made in consultation with your veterinarian. Every pet is unique, and recommendations can vary based on factors like breed, age, and lifestyle.

Benefits of Spaying/Neutering:

  • Health Benefits: Reduces the risk of cancers and life-threatening infections (like pyometra, an infection of the uterus common in intact female pets).
  • Behavioral Benefits: Helps minimize roaming, marking, and certain aggression-related behaviors.
  • Community Benefits: Reduces overpopulation and the incidence of genetic issues due to non-health-tested breeding practices.

We encourage all pet parents to have a thoughtful conversation with your veterinarian to create an intentional reproductive health plan tailored to your individual pet.

Spay (Ovariohysterectomy)

Spaying is the surgical removal of the uterus and ovaries under general anesthesia. It not only prevents unwanted pregnancies but also significantly reduces the risk of certain diseases.

Neuter (Castration)

Neutering is the surgical removal of the testicles under general anesthesia, while the scrotal sac remains intact. It can reduce unwanted behaviors, prevent certain health conditions, and help your pet live a longer, healthier life.

In some cases, one or both testicles may not descend properly (a condition called cryptorchidism). If this happens, additional surgery may be required to locate and remove the undescended testicle(s).

Advanced Care for Cryptorchid Neuters: Our North London location is equipped with ultrasound technology to help locate retained testicles. This allows your veterinarian to know exactly where the testicle is located in the abdomen, reducing the need for exploratory surgery. This means a less invasive surgery with shorter surgical time for your pet.
